November 2002

Andrew on the Grayland beach
Andrew was the gracious friend who invited me along for a trip to the coast this weekend. While in Grayland, we made a visit to Andrew's mother's cousin's husband's beach house and hung out with "Uncle Bob" for a while. He was a very cool man who knew tons about the area... he's been fishing there was he was 17 years old, and now is a major salmon and seafood distributor worldwide. Cool. :)

Beach in Grayland
Very pretty coast, but not as rocky and dramatic as some in the Northwest like in Oregon or northern WA. I'm also betting that warmer, sunnier, drier weather would've made the vistas a bit more "majestic."

Valiant Sponge Bob
The winds were probably between 25 and 30 MPH on the coast, and little Sponge Bob wasn't suited for that kind of force. He put up a valiant effort, but we retired him pretty quickly as he was getting torn and bending a bit too much for comfort.

Beach Highway
Did you know the WA coast is considered a public highway? It's true... cars can (and do) drive along the beach, just as the sign says. We wanted to try it, but because of the rains and the high tides, we decided against it. (Getting stuck on the beach in wet sand would have sucked).

Harbor in Westport
Most of boats in this area are commercial fishing boats, though some do charter fishing tours for the folks that like to get out there and do it themselves.

The Jetty in Westport
The jetty in Westport keeps the huge waves from coming into town. There was a storm coming in when we were there this weekend and the waves were a pretty good size. We probably saw about 50 surfers out that day, even though it was super cold.

Beach in Tokeland
Yep, the town in named Tokeland. And yep, there's even a Bonge Street. Too funny!

Fantasy Cabins?
With a sign like that, we had to check it out! Some of the cabins were big enough for families or groups of friends... like the Jungle one that had an off the group tree house that sleeps 6!

Adults Only
However, others were for "adults only" and the Queen's Night Inn even had a stock to lock up your lover. These toys could be purchased from the sweet old gray haired woman who is the manager of the properties. Crazy stuff... www.fantasycabins.net

Cranberry Bogs!
The NW apparently produces an incredibly high amount of cranberries... and the bogs here are much more dense than anywhere else in the nation. Who knew? On our drive out of town, we gave ourselves a little peak at the local farms.

Little pink fields
We drove blindly around the area checking out farm after farm, but apparently there's also a self-guided driving tour of the area with tons of facts and trivia... I'd be up for going again and doing it with the tour. Cranberry Tour

The End! Many thanks to Andrew for the trip!
