Concerts I've seen lately

Today we shall list as many concerts, bands, shows, etc. as I can think of
that I've attended in the past few years... At the request of visitor Mike, I've
started adding some tidbits about the shows and have also added their official
websites if they have one. Enjoy!

If there's a concert missing from this list that you know I've seen or
that you went to me with, please drop me a line. I've seen a good number of
shows, but after a while, I don't always remember all of them.

Violent Femmes

Morrissey, with Sack as the support band
Very cool show! Saw
him at the Forum in London... wow! Sure, we can all joke about his depressing
music, but his shows are energetic and lively! His music's solid, he's passion
is apparent, and his stage prescence as a preformer is really strong! He
played some classics radio tunes (Tomorrow, Girl Friend in a Coma, etc) as
well as other old and new material. I'd never seen him before (in the US or
the UK), but here he spoke out about the Royal family as well as issues such
as hunting. Impressive to see he was as passionate about the community and
issues as he was passionate about his own music. Oh, and the highlight of the
show, I met a lovely boy from Newcastle named Richard. :) He claimed to be
shy, but that I severly doubt. He made the concert experience even better than
it already was. What a great guy!

G Love and Special Sauce... again!
Was the second time I saw G
Love and he was just as alluring as the first! Very soulful, very groovin, and
very energetic! What a sexy man! Played lots of old, some classics too, and
the freestyle stuff was great! Jimmy, too, was awesome as always!

Boogie Wonderland
Great disco band in London. Played stuff from
Abba to Barry White... Very groovin... great for dancing as well!

Randy Travis
Ahh... Randy. Classic country... right up there
with George Straight and Hank Williams, Jr. I used to listen to tons of Randy
when I was younger (middle school era) and have been a fan for a while. Didn't
know tons of his new stuff, but he did play some classics so I was content!

Trish Yearwood
She's what I consider to be "new country" and I
wasn't expecting much, but she's real energetic, talkative, and just friendly.
Strong music too... She sang lots of song I sang along with that I didn't even
 know she did. Very nice!

Loverboy
Horrible 80s! The band's older and worn out - should
be put to rest. Well, it wasn't all that bad. The lead singer - he was
replusive, horrible, old, grossly overweight, bad haircut, and kept shouting
"show me your tits ladies." The rest of the band was okay. Music? Okay too.
Might have been better if I hadn't been so turned off by the infantile antics
of the repulsive lead singer. Yuck! They did play all of the songs you'd
recogize - "Working For The Weekend," "Turn Me Loose," "Heaven in Your Eyes"
 (Top Gun soundtrack), etc.

Men at Work
Awesome 80s! Great show! Though the guys were a bit
older now, they still know how to rock and really get the crowd going! Really
a terrific show... played all of their old classics... "Down Under," "Who Can
It Be Now?," "Be Good Johnny," etc. Crowd was great too... some folks had
their original LPs with them to get signed! We got to meet Simon after the
 show... very nice guy!

Guy Forsyth
Awesome live Austin music at it's best! Guy used to be
part of the Spankers, but left a while back to do his own thing and damn is he
doing it well! Kinda bluesy, kinda rocking, great for solo dancing, swing, and
just plain grooving. I have no expertise in attempting to describe his music.
Though I can say I loved the burning harmonica solos and screaming slide
guitar, as I heard another put it. Very powerful, much fun! Thanks go out to
Bill for inviting me to the show to see his friend Guy. :)

They Might Be Giants, with opening act
 Mike Shelly
While Mike played good, old fashioned fun pop music, TMBG
played like they're famous for... energetic and fun! The canon was there for
James Polk, we congo-ed through the crowd in appropriate places, they lip
synched to the puppets, and we all bounced up and down to the guitars and
accordian groove throughout the whole, terrific, amazingly energetic show! The
Johns were in fine form, and the Dans were terrific as well. Played new stuff,
works in progress, and of course classics like "Birdhouse in my Soul,"
"Partical Man," and "Istanbul." (Thanks go out to my friend Mitch for the
invite!). Oh, and in case you're wondering, the People won. :)

Liz Phair, opening
 band the Damnations
the Damnations were good, slow, swinging country
music, which was cool. But, Liz Phair just rocked! Awesome show... highly
encourgageed! That little tiny women on stage with so much presence, so much
energy! She commands your respect and elicits and amazing response from the
crowds! Personally, with lyrics like hers, how could you not love the music
(and the beautiful women behind them)?

Skatalites
The Skatalites, formed in 1960, are a staple of our
times... the founding fathers of the Ska music movement and the unending quest
for freedom. Says band leader Tommy McCook, "Ska is a Jamaican rhythm that
came from the mento and popular American blues. You know mento is a form of
calypso with the early Jamaican rhythm. It's a little bit slower than the
calypso beat. We speeded it up and ska came out of that." It's pretty awesome
music... jazz, blues, and rock all rolled into one groogroob

Dave Matthews Band (again), with
 opening band the Getaway People
It was my 2nd time seeing Dave, and my first time for the Getaway People,
and both bands were terrific. If there's one thing for sure, Dave can
definitely dance, even while jamming on the guitar, which was frequent with
all of the extended songs they did. If you've never seen (or heard) the
Getaway People, be sure to see them live or listen to their self titled CD -
it's grooving with a great funky beat. Worth purchasing!

Tool (again), with opening band the
 Melvins
This was my second Tool show and it was great! The bad has such
intense music and and an amazing energy - the crowds can never get enough!
Maynard amused me this time by wearing a bar the whole show. "We're playing
Houston tomorrow and Dallas the next day and I'm going to be a different
gender for all three shows..." was how he explained the lingerie. He also
amused me when he explained why the space between the crowd, the security
guys, and the stage: "Just in case there were any homophobes in the crowd, we
wanted to give you your comfort zone now just in case. Hey, what is a
homophobe anyway? Is that kind of like a Mormon?" It's kind of neat to see
such a hard core band like Tool be so openminded and accepting. Very cool
 indeed.

Eric Burdon
Classsic rock fans
may or may not remember him... but will definately remember his hit song
"House of the Rising Sun" and other tunes he did during his time as lead
 singer for the Animals.

Blue October
Houston band... not too bad, played energetic diverse
music. I was especially impressed by the lead singer... a man who was actually
concerned for the welfare of the fans and crowd. I was very pleased to see him
scold men in the crowd for manhandling a female crowed surfer. The band gets
points in my book just for that sensativity.

Asylum Street Spankers (lots
 of times)
They're great! Eleven pieces, all acoustic, all the time! Check
them out in Austin every Wednesday at the Electric Lounge at 10pm and every
Sunday at La Zona Rosa's Gospel Brunch at 11am. You'll love it!!

Stereolab (good music, but absolutely no stage presence)

High Llamas (just odd)

the Refreshments (again)
They were even better the second time if that's possible! Lots of energy!
Great music! Terrific attitude! Lots of fun to watch, listen to, drool over!
Great guys with great rock n' roll!
